The Reparenting and the Return (2013-2015)
Jane Doe became a resident at a local substance abuse treatment facility in 2014. At the time of admission, she was in the crisis stage of recovery and presented as unemployed, with active substance use and strained family relationships. During her residency, Jane Doe attended individual counseling, support groups, and life skills programming, and maintained consistent participation with partnering organizations.
Jane Doe achieved goals related to employment, enrollment in cosmetology school, and reestablishing family connections. She successfully completed the program and was awarded a certificate of completion covering the period from August 3, 2013, to May 19, 2014.
In 2015, Jane Doe moved back into her mother’s home. Limited information is available regarding that period due to largely unreasonable therapy notes. The following was documented:
01/25/16
Jane Doe reported that she has not had a meaningful relationship with her mother since 2011. She stated that she asked her mother at that time to have a relationship, but felt that her mother was emotionally unable to do so. Jane Doe reported that her mother’s comments toward her were focused primarily on her appearance and that there was little emotional engagement. Jane Doe stated that she was advised at the time that her mother was unable to provide what she was seeking, and she reported that she ultimately gave up on pursuing a relationship with her.
Jane Doe also referenced a prior assault by her brother that occurred in or around 2006. She stated that her father responded with visible emotional distress, whereas her mother currently speaks about the brother frequently and interacts with him in a friendly manner. Jane Doe reported feeling distressed by this contrast.
Jane Doe stated that her mother does not ask her direct questions or communicate openly, but instead monitors her by reading her phone and text messages without permission. She reported a pattern of hoping for change in the relationship, followed by disappointment when these expectations are not met.
